To simplify heavy topics such as love, caste and its intersection with gender let me begin with my story. I come from the Nanded, one of the most backward regions of Marathwada in Maharashtra. I studied in Marathi medium till graduation, and did odd jobs in companies in Pune. The course exposed me to the concepts of intersectionality. I also learnt how caste, class, gender, race, ethnicity, and disability operate in society. I observed things inside the classroom as well as outside it. I experienced mobility and freedom, saw how relationships were created. Thus began my research that took me to JNU, where I found people of diverse sexualities — bisexual, asexual, intersex and heterosexual people. After interviewing about 20 people, I discovered that romantic relationships were not simple. Some found emotional love and care empowering, some sought comfort zones, while some wanted to move out of the comfort zone and date people with differing ideologies.

In much of South Asia, race has become coterminous with caste in the definition and exclusion of distinct population groups distinguished by their descent. Despite formal protections in law, discriminatory treatment remains endemic and discriminatory societal norms continue to be reinforced by government structures ranging from the police and the lower courts to state and municipal authorities. In India alone, close to million so-called “untouchables” or Dalits known in legal parlance as scheduled castes are routinely discriminated against, denied access to land, forced to work in degrading conditions, and routinely abused, even killed, at the hands of the police and of higher-caste groups that enjoy the state’s protection.
In what has been called India’s “hidden apartheid,” entire villages in many Indian states remain completely segregated by caste. Despite the fact that untouchability was abolished under India’s constitution in , the practice of untouchabilitythe imposition of social disabilities on persons by reason of birth into a particular caste remains very much a part of rural India. Untouchables may not cross the line dividing their part of the village from that occupied by higher castes.

Dalits are at the very bottom of the archaic caste system that lives on in South Asia. The caste system refers to a social stratification, whereby individuals face multiple generations of discrimination and segregation based on their descent. Social mobility is often impossible when children born into a certain caste are systematically denied opportunities, starting from food, education and health to jobs and civic rights. As a woman, Das faced even more discrimination. However, her strong will and sense of injustice compelled her to join the Bangladesh Dalit and Excluded Rights Movement, and for the past 15 years she has been mobilizing local women to be part of the Dalit movement.

I almost nodded in agreement, instantly realising how furious it made me. Yes for a Dalit woman, I live a very privileged life but what does my privilege exactly include? As far as I know, I am just a regular working class educated woman living an independent life. Apparently meeting the basic requirement makes me elite, and in my case, an elite Dalit woman.
